Does anybody know which controllers definitely do support hot swapping?
I have seen some motherboards come with dual SATA controllers one part of the Intel chipset, another as an option provided by the motherboard manufacturer and usually with more ports 4 or greater. So any controller for 2 or SATA 1 inrel they added the feature should work. Write, remove from the system and bring back after 875pp week or so. My question is if you are using one of the RAID enabled controllers, does the drive need to be part of a RAID array to support hot swapping or can you also use it as a removable drive?

The SATA power and data connectors are designed so that, as you remove the drive, the connections are broken in the right order, and vice versa. This is because many SATA host adapters, like ATA generally absent special hardware provisions, simply don’t support hotplug functionality.
